Some parables are common to all three Synoptic Gospels, such as the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:3-23, Mark 4:2-20, and Luke 8:4-15). As Isaiah prophesied, there are people who will hear these parables and never perceive or understand the truths contained therein. First, we must depend on the Holy Spirit. Clifton Black, in his recent commentary, summarizes the effect of this chapter insightfully: “The astringency of Mark’s epistemology, his view of the conditions under which understanding is possible, is at once a balm to the vulnerable, frail as seeds, and an indictment of those who presume some inside track onto the workings of the Almighty.”2. Hear the word of God! God is faithful. Jesus explains the thorny ground with these words: these are the ones who have heard the word, 19 and the worries of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word (Mark 4:18-19 NASB). This is where we must be reminded that the key verse to understanding the entire Gospel of Mark is from last week’s sermon. So in essence, Jesus is saying: "These mysteries need to be taken to heart. So, we read, “The Kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground.” This is the warning He gives in verses 10-12: And as soon as He was alone, His followers, along with the twelve, began asking Him about the parables. So Ezekiel was to them a performer, a maestro, fun to listen to but having no impact on their lives. Crowds are thrill-seeking.
